The Butt Of Ones Jokes

Hello again,

I recently remembered a time from my childhood where my Mum was telling friends an embarrassing story about me (I stripped completely naked in McDonalds) and I burst into tears for 2 reasons.

1)I didn't actually remember what she was talking about and 2) I was deeply embarrassed.

After we left our friends' house, my Mum told me one of life's greatest lessons - "You have to learn to laugh at yourself".

I have always tried to remember that whenever I am in situations where things don't always go to plan and others insist on reminding me of it. I think it is a really valuable skill to have. One which some people do not possess.

I must mention here that there is actually a fine line between people making a joke of silly situations and taking it one step too far and entering the boundaries of bullying.

But all in light humour and fun, laughing at oneself is an important skill to posses. I have personally been in situations where telling a funny story which includes another and they completely and utterly deny it ever occurring - because they can't laugh at themselves. Not only did this make me look like a compulsive liar, it made me really question that person as to how seriously they take themselves.

I think it's ok sometimes to admit mistakes and laugh - otherwise surely you would cry?

Speak soon,

L xx
